The Commission welcomes the Council’s adoption of an eighth package of hard-hitting sanctions against Russia for its aggression against Ukraine. This package – which has been closely coordinated with our international partners – responds to Russia’s continued escalation and illegal war against Ukraine, including by illegally annexing Ukrainian territory based on sham “referenda”, mobilising additional troops, and issuing open nuclear threats.

5th round of EU sanctions
In light of Russia’s continuing war of aggression against Ukraine, and the reported atrocities committed by Russian armed forces in Ukraine, the Council decided today to impose a fifth package of economic and individual sanctions against Russia.
The agreed package includes a series of measures intended to reinforce pressure on the Russian government and economy, and to limit the Kremlin’s resources for the aggression.

4th level of EU sanctions
In response to Russian President Putin’s unprecedented and unprovoked military attack against Ukraine, the EU has put in place a comprehensive and robust package of restrictive sanctions designed to:
- cripple the Kremlin’s ability to finance the war
- impose clear economic and political costs on Russia’s political elite responsible for invasion
- and diminish its economic base
